A sexually transmitted infection (STI) is a condition acquired through sexual activities involving the mouth, anus, vagina, or penis. The terms STI and Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI) are often used interchangeably.
The most common STI in the US, Chlamydia trachomatis bacterium is spread through sex, whether it is oral, anal, or vaginal. This STI shows little to no symptoms.
Herpes simplex virus (HSV) causes oral herpes, genital herpes and infections in other areas of your body. There is no cure but there are treatment options. Usually causes pain and sores in the genital area.
This STI often shows no symptoms. Your chances of contracting gonorrhea are increased if you are young or if you have had an STI before. If left untreated, it can cause infertility.
Hepatitis B is a viral infection that damages your liver. You can get it if you’re exposed to infected bodily fluids. The acute form of the virus often goes away without treatment. But chronic hepatitis B is an incurable illness.
Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is the virus that causes acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS). HIV weakens your immune system by destroying your T-cells until you are unable to fight off even minor illnesses. You can have HIV without any symptoms.
More than 30 strains of the human papillomavirus (HPV) can affect your genitals. These include harmless forms of HPV, like those that cause genital warts. Only some types of HPV are “high risk” because they can progress to cancer.
Syphilis is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) that’s treatable with medication. Without treatment, syphilis causes serious health problems. It can permanently damage your heart, brain, muscles, bones and eyes. To reduce your risk of infection, always use a condom during sex.
